An image of myself, Cheyne Mosher.

Hi, I'm Cheyne.

Senior Email Marketing & Automation Manager

Professional Summary

I've been managing and refining organizational email platforms for roughly 10 years. I have experience in a range of top ESPs including Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Marketo, Mailchimp and Hubspot.

Some of my typical duties include:
• Front to back ESP management
• Automated, multi-faceted user lifecycle journeys
• Management and deployment of promotional email calendars and transactional backbones
• API implementation for ESP integrations and automated email environments
• A/B Testing, monitoring, best practices and strategic planning
• Data hygiene and email personalization using handlebars.js template logic and similar tools
• Managing GDPR, CAN-SPAM and other regulatory practices

My formal education is a Degree in Marketing, and I previously worked in Web Development before moving into email full-time, so I'm comfortable utilizing languages like HTML/CSS/JSON and JavaScript templating via Handlebars.js.

This prior development experience has proven especially useful in the past couple of years, as it also streamlines the use of AI-assisted coding. These models allow the efficient completion of a diverse range of coding tasks, saving time and vastly increasing capability.

I also have experience sending and integrating SMS, via both auto-response frameworks and ongoing promotional blasts (see my projects on LinkedIn for more information). SMS is complementary to email; the two channels can be integrated together to achieve fantastic results, and their data outputs benefit each other.

At the end of the day, my goal is to manage, refine and systematically improve email marketing channels, including the management and/or implementation of related channels such as SMS.

Work Experience

We used Mailchimp and Iterable at Troon, and my main responsibilities included:

• Sending an ongoing promotional calendar and supplementary customer retention sends such as newsletters and other informational pieces such as reactivation campaigns.

• Deploying automated sends such as product and subscription lifecycle journeys, automated notifications, and abandoned cart interactions.

• Holistically maintaining the back-end email environment, creating and modifying user segmentation, implementing data structures and verifying its ongoing accuracy, data hygiene, and managing and implementing automated integrated applications such as Stripe.

• Providing strategic analysis including ESP reputation management, guidance and technical support, and refining email content.

I had two main priorities when I started at iD Tech:

1) Take on their existing email channel and reimagine it including a full promotional calendar with new custom templates to increase conversion for the upcoming camp year.

2) Renovate their automation and data platforms including lifecycle journeys, advanced segmentation, personalization, and SMS. We also migrated from Mailchimp to the Iterable ESP, and I received extensive contracted training under an Iterable tech lead that I still find very valuable to this day.

During my tenure at iD Tech, email became the #1 promotional channel, and that work was ultimately an important element of the company being successfully acquired. More information about my time at iD Tech can be found on my LinkedIn Profile ↗️.

When I joined HeartMath, they had a Marketo instance of roughly 750,000 leads. I trained under the senior email marketing manager and became a Marketo Certified Expert, which solidified my love for email marketing.

During my time at HeartMath, I learned email marketing from a seasoned professional and used that training to deploy a full transactional backbone, promotional calendar, and automated lifecycle journeys.

Additionally, I regularly ran the technical back-end of a webinar system, staging and managing the webinars and emailing the resulting video file(s) to users.

About a year into my employment, we migrated our Marketo instance to Salesforce Marketing Cloud, the abilities of which more closely matched organizational goals. After this transition, I took over management of the email channel while my manager assumed ownership of our web platform. After the migration, I ran the email marketing channel for roughly two years before transitioning to work at iD Tech Camps.

I built small business websites for several years before joining Bay Photo as a front-end developer. Through this process I learned HTML, CSS, basic Javascript and JQuery.

That experience leveraged me into a position as a Front-End Developer at Bay Photo maintaining a website accessed by thousands of paid users a day. I stayed in this role for roughly 2.5 years.

At Bay Photo, I worked under a senior developer to maintain the front-end website. We created and managed product pages, constantly iterated on the UX experience and Facebook presence, and created landing pages for new products and promotional initiatives. We used the Jira project management system and versioning through Git to keep our work organized and error-free.

As a two-person team we wore many hats and I learned so much about front-end development and working seamlessly to quickly accomplish the goals of various departments and stakeholders.

My work at Bay Photo, and years of website building before that, established many skills that I still use to this day. Web Development and Email are powerful complementary skills which also synergize well with my Marketing degree.

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to work with several ESPs. Additionally, I've helped conduct three ESP migrations, the specifics of which are detailed below:

Mailchimp to Iterable at iD Tech
I was hired at iD Tech to upgrade, automate, and redefine their email marketing channel. Mailchimp is a versatile ESP, but we had a huge amount of user data attached to a proprietary in-house database system. We wanted to make use of the advanced personalization and automation capabilities of Iterable, including the Catalog system, and we wanted to implement Iterable's multi-channel capability of push and auto-respond SMS to increase conversions and then tie that data back into our email efforts.

It was a tremendous undertaking to move over all of our existing data and email structures (such as automated lifecycle journeys), but the real challenge was mapping out our entire internal database system and hook that all into Iterable. At this time, iD Tech also contracted with Iterable so that I could mentor under a lead solutions architect, which ended up being amazing.

Many of our internal datapoints hadn't been integrated into Mailchimp before I came on board, so we had to do them from scratch in Iterable. During this process, we created nearly 40 custom data inflows (mapping to the user profile) and established over 50 Iterable Custom Events - a form of bespoke API interaction within Iterable that is particularly useful.

Ultimately, our migration to Iterable was very successful and was a key driver in our year over year revenue growth, as well as a crucial element of our eventual company sale a few years later.

Marketo to Salesforce Marketing Cloud at HeartMath
At HeartMath, I learned the ropes of email marketing under a fantastic email marketing manager. We used a B2C Marketo instance with over 750,000 leads. We initiated the ESP migration to Salesforce Marketing Cloud for two reasons:

1) At the time of my onboarding, HeartMath was converting from a B2B centric company to a more B2C hybrid company. As a result, their Marketo instance was highly geared towards B2B. We determined that in order to facilitate this broader shift into B2C, starting fresh with a B2C focus was essential. We used both platforms while I was employed there, but my personal work was in Salesforce Marketing Cloud 80% of the time after the migration, and having a B2C-forward infrastructure was a great help!

2) The company itself was using Salesforce as its primary CRM and it was a natural fit to migrate operations to SFMC for that reason as well. Having two platforms with different overall capabilities and goals for various parts of the company fit our structure better and allowed us to provide B2C and B2B options.

Mailchimp to Iterable at Troon Golf
The various subdivisions in Troon Golf use multiple ESPs. As part of the Digital Marketing group, we primarily used Mailchimp, with another similar internal team using Acoustic. Our group was formed to handle a new subscription platform called Troon Access ↗️, and part of that transition involved a migration to the Iterable ESP. I handled the promotional calendar and general ESP/data duties in Mailchimp along with creating and maintaining automated lifecycle journeys while this transition was underway.

We migrated our Mandrill transactional portfolio to Iterable while moving over the leads, data integrations, templates and lifecycle journeys. We successfully transitioned off the Mailchimp ESP and into Iterable, closing the Mailchimp account and using Iterable as the primary ESP.

About Me

I'm a tech and outdoor enthusiast living near Seattle, Washington. In terms of tech, I enjoy several hobbies including coding, meteorology, computers, and generally tinkering with technical projects. I'm always learning and trying to improve. I created my first website on Geocities in the early 2000s and have been immersed in coding and the internet ever since. My morning routine includes weather charts and various app dashboards. I also like repairing things; currently, at the time of this writing, I'm repairing the motor in our automated vacuum.

To maintain a healthy balance, I'm also a big enjoyer of the outdoors.
I lived in Santa Cruz, California for much of my life and was an avid surfer for over 15 years, including numerous international surfing trips to destinations like Costa Rica, the Baja Peninsula, and Hawaii. I also love mountain biking and hiking. The Cascade Mountains have so many amazing hikes. Our most recent hike was at Lake 22 ↗️. It's such a beautiful area.

In terms of mountain biking, we do trail rides all along the central Cascades. For lift-style mountain biking, Whistler Mountain, BC is my favorite venue for that in North America, and it's a fairly easy car trip away.

I'm always looking for hobbyists that share my passions. Feel free to contact me if you would like to chat!
